In this video, we are on Senja and driving to the Vesterålen. We take the less obvious route to get there and we have a lot of bad weather on the way.

Storm on Senja

We still start this vlog on Senja, another part of the island. There is a big storm, and we have to spend the day mostly indoors as things fly around us. We use our big camper to shield the smaller vans from most of the wind as they really struggle with the hard gusts. When the rain becomes more drizzle, Marten and Jan go on a little hike.

The next day Emma splits up with us to go on a multiday hike on the Vesterålen. We decide, together with Jan, to also drive to the Vesterålen, but take an unusual route. We don’t take the direct ferry from Senja to the Vesterålen but we drive down and do some island hopping.

Island hopping

We find a fabulous spot on Andørja where we have amazing views. While Jan goes for a long hike, we work in the morning and then go for a little hike ourselves. Though Natalie thinks she could also just have spent her whole day staring at the amazing view.

The view is so amazing, and the weather so nice, that we decide to stay for an extra night, watching the views and grilling some meat over a fire.

The next afternoon we start driving and do a little bit more island hopping. We go from Andørja to Rolla and take the ferry across to the mainland. From there, we take another ferry to Grytøya. Jan explores the two small islands next to it to look for nice parking spots for the night while we drive around on the bigger island. In the end, we find a very desolate space next to some sheep.

Meeting up with Emma

We meet up with Emma on the mainland, very close to Andøja. We found a nice camping with a helpful owner, and we take the time to all do some work and shower. We also have fun hiking all together to a nearby lake. Who cares that it’s raining?! We are having fun.

Marten and I go on a longer hike the next day to a bigger lake on the other side of the mountain. It’s misty and rainy and grey when we start, and the weather keeps changing during our walk. It goes from drizzling to pouring but also to clear blue skies. The hike turns out to be a bit longer than we expected but it is really nice. We are enthralled with all of the amazing views, and it’s so fun to see all the autumnal colours starting to appear. You can really see it’s been raining a lot lately, as the ground is really soggy in places, especially around the lake. At the lake, there is a little hideaway where we chill and drink and eat before we start on the hike back.
