As a motorhome traveller, La Roque-Gageac is a must-visit destination in France. This small village is tucked away in the stunning Dordogne Valley and is surrounded by limestone cliffs that seem to reach up to the sky. Though we would recommend going in spring or summer, this is one location in France you cannot miss.
La Roque Gageac’s location
La Roque-Gageac is a charming little village situated in the picturesque Dordogne area. The Dordogne is known for its natural beauty and rich history and has always been a popular destination for tourists from all over the world. The village is located in close proximity to other popular tourist destinations, such as Sarlat-la-Canéda, providing visitors with a wide range of attractions to choose from.
Nestled along the banks of the Dordogne River, La Roque Gageac enjoys a unique location that offers not only easy access but also natural protection. The mountains that surround the village provide a sense of security and add to the overall charm of the area.
The history of the village
La Roque-Gageac is not only beautiful and charming, but it’s also rich in history. Its historical significance dates back to the 12th century when a majestic castle was constructed on the cliff overlooking the village. This castle, known as Château de La Roque-Gageac, served as a strategic fortification during the turbulent times of the Hundred Years’ War.
Today, you can still see the ruins of the castle and learn about its fascinating history. Exploring the castle grounds offers a unique opportunity to transport yourself back in time, imagining the tales of battles and the lives of those who inhabited its sturdy walls. Standing on the cliff, overlooking the village and the picturesque Dordogne River, you can’t help but feel a sense of awe and appreciation for the historical significance that surrounds you.
In addition to the castle, the village is also home to a number of historic buildings and monuments that provide a glimpse into its rich cultural heritage. There is the Romanesque church that dates back to the 12th century, during the time of the castle. But there are also plenty of other activities to enjoy. For example, if you’re looking for a bit of adventure, take a kayak or canoe down the Dordogne River. You’ll be able to get a unique perspective of the stunning valley and see La Roque-Gageac from the water. It’s definitely an experience you won’t forget.
In addition, if you’re interested in cycling, there are plenty of scenic bike routes in the area that will take you through the countryside and past other charming villages.
Great overnight stays
If you want to go to La Roque-Gageac, you will need to find a place for your motorhome of course. In the village, there is a paid motorhome park where you can stay. Though you can stay here overnight, it is not a great place, because it will be very busy and loud during the busy season. It is also hard to find a spot.
You can also go to a campsite and a camper site near La Roque-Gageac, at Vézac, the village next to it. We stayed at the camper site, which offered electricity, waste facilities and streaming water. And that was all that we needed. The camper site was next to the road, but when we were there, traffic was still low. The campsite was next to the ‘beach’ of the Dordogne River and a bit further away from the road. From these two spots, you can walk to the village in about 15 minutes. It is a pleasant walk with amazing views.

If you want to have a spot in summer, we recommend you come pretty early in the morning, as it will be very busy in the season. But we would recommend you go in spring or autumn when it is less busy. The only downfall is that not everything in the village might be open.
