Mont Saint Michel
We start by visiting the Mont Saint Michel. Even though the weather isn’t great, we take our bikes to the island, and we are glad because it is actually quite busy, and the buses are full. We aren’t used to people anymore, so it’s stunning to see this many people in one place.
The UNESCO world heritage site Mont Saint Michel is a tidal island which used to be only reachable during low tide. These days there is a bridge that will take you across. The island has a big abbey on top, which is still a place of pilgrimage. The Christian building is surrounded by pretty houses that show the medieval times in which this place was built.
Free Camp Spot
We start driving down to Bordeaux over the next few days. The afternoon after visiting Mont Saint Michel, we stay at our first completely free camp spot, and we are there very much alone.
Unfortunately, it started to storm while we were standing there, and instead of driving to our next spot, we decide to drive all the way to Bordeaux. The driving was hard and scary at times, and we were glad to be at a campsite for the next few days.
Bordeaux
We meet up with Marisa and Sean, friends of Natalie, in Bordeaux and walk around the city. They show us around while we catch up and chat during the lovely spring day.
After our meet-up, we drive from the coast inwards through lovely wine fields.
La Roque-Gageac
France has declared several villages ‘Prettiest villages of France’, and La Roque-Gageac is one of those villages. This cute little village is built near the Dordogne river at the foot of a cliff. Some of the orangy houses are even partly cut out of the rock.
In the summer, this place is flooded with tourists. But in early spring, it is still quite quiet; it even takes a while to find a place to drink a cup of coffee!
Marten also explores the surrounding area on his electric mountain bike.
Domme
Before we drive to Natalie’s parents, who live in the middle of France, we visit Domme. Domme is also one of those ‘prettiest villages of France’, and it really is a cute medieval village. We arrive early on a dreary morning, and the village is almost desolate. After a nice cup of coffee to pick us up we get lost in the bookshop that has both used and new books and feels a bit like a maze.
