In this video, we drive from the unofficial north cape Slettness to the real North Cape. Once there, we are stunned; what is going on?
Silfar Canyon
On our way up to Sletness, we saw signs for Silfar Canyon and decided to have a look. Without any expectations, we drove to the parking lot where we spent the night and headed for the canyon in the morning.
Wow, what an amazing view! The green-ish Børselv river flows wildly through the canyon. You can go down to the river or hike up to the highest point to see the gorge created by the fastly streaming water. There isn’t much information about Silfar Canyon on the internet, so this was very unexpected but definitely worth the visit!
North Cape
We stay on a campsite for a few days as the weather turns bad again, and then we drive to the North Cape. The drive goes on for a while and offers stunning views of fjords, mountains, and small coastal villages while we go along the road. As we approach the North Cape, the landscape becomes increasingly barren and rugged. The road becomes narrow and winding, and there are a few steep inclines and sharp curves. The road also shows it’s been very windy, and it was smart that we waited a few days.
We arrive in the morning, but the parking lot is already very busy. Marten, however, finds us a spot in the front row, looking out on the rugged terrain and the ocean a bit further away. We are so glad we are early because we keep seeing more and more and more cars and motorhomes joining us in the North Cape parking lot. We are stunned by the amounts that just keep coming. Some of them just come and ‘check it off’ and leave about an hour later. Others, like us, park their motorhomes and want to stay for a night.
The famous Globe monument at the tip of the North Cape is filled with people. A long line of people is waiting to get their photo taken with the landmark. We decide to wait until the evening to visit it and expect it to be calmer by then. We also love that we get to photograph the monument with the midnight sun.
But by midnight, it is still very very busy, and it turns out that it is the last night that the sun is completely above the horizon, so everyone wanted to come and see this. And so, instead of it becoming calmer, we keep seeing new buses arrive, full of people coming from cruise ships in one of the nearby villages.
So we go back to our camper a few times to wait it out. We drink tea to stay warm and take in the different views from the sun at different moments during the night. And around 4 am, we finally manage to get our photos taken!
We sleep in and travel to another part of the north the next day, where we get to play, have fun, and chill for a bit.
