In this video, we are in Denmark! We visit a few villages and cities before completely changing our plans for our road trip.
Going home to the Netherlands
At the end of the earlier video, you see us leaving Switzerland and going to Germany. We had received some bad news and wanted to return to the Netherlands for a bit to support our friends. We decided against going home because that would feel like a full stop and instead opted to stay on a friends’ driveway. We were only there for 2 nights and then drove to Denmark in two days.
Tønder & Møgeltønder
We start our Denmark trip just over the border from Germany, camping near Møgeltønder and visiting that village and Tønder over the next few days. The villages are both cute and the weather is excellent.
It’s nice to be able to use the bikes to get around.
Christiansfeld
We then visit the UNESCO world heritage site of Christiansfeld. The village was actually founded by Dutch people in 1773. The town was constructed around a square with all the main buildings close to that square. And there were separate quarters in the village, keeping unmarried men and women separated. The village plan was wholly thought out beforehand, making streets straight instead of curved, and the village’s architecture is homogenous, all looking the same.
The village is also known for its honey cakes, so we also try those out.
Jelling
We drive further into Denmark and come to a region that is more hilly, which we didn’t expect in the very flat country. We also learn from our host that we are near the famous Jelling stones, and of course, we have to check those out.
The Jelling stones are massive carved runestones from the 10th century. The older stone was commissioned by King Gorm the Old in memory of his wife Thyra. The second, bigger stone, was made by King Gorm’s son in memory of his parents. The stones are on the UNESCO World Heritage list as an example of both pagan and Christian culture.
Change of plans
At the end of our video, we discuss our change of plan. We want to see the midnight sun and realise that if we don’t start travelling a bit faster up north, we might miss it. We decide to go to Sweden first, drive north and then take the way down through Norway. We also discuss a few reasons why:
- We have too much alcohol with us for Norway right now. You are only allowed to take 9 litres of wine and 4 litres of beer into the country from a European country, and right now, we have more.
- We have seen more of Sweden than Norway so far. And though there is more we want to see in the South of Sweden, we feel less bad about skipping that right now as it is easier to return to at the end of our trip or another time.
- The boat from Denmark to Norway is quite expensive, and if we go to Sweden, we could drive around and see more. And taking a boat on the way back from Norway gives us more options too.
