In this video, we go on an off-road adventure by accident. We drive around on Andøya when we come across a really bad road. Will our camper survive?

Andøya, Vesterålen

We start this vlog by driving to Andøya, one of the islands of Vesterålen. The archipelago is just above the Lofoten islands and is known for its breathtaking scenery. Jan, Marten and Natalie really wanted to see Andøya but Emma already spent some days there recently and so she went ahead to Sortland, another island of the island group, while we drive around in the rain. We saw there was a road all around the island and so we decided to take the day and do a road trip.

We had only done a little bit of the road when we came across a sign that said, ‘Due to poor road conditions, travel at own risk’. We decided to just drive a little bit further and see how bad it would really get.

It was quite an adventure driving this ‘road’. Jan several times thought our motorhome would not be able to do it, or that we wouldn’t be able to do it. But Marten is skilled and isn’t scared of a bit of off-road driving, and it was actually kind of fun to drive this!

After we’ve cleared the road, we go to a viewpoint at the Børhella Lighthouse. While we are there a storm comes in and we get soaked. Andøya is showing its worst, but we aren’t deterred by it at all. It’s a beautiful island, and we would love to get back to it sometime.

Sortland

We suddenly realise that its the last day Jan, Emma and us will be together as we are going to meet up with friends on Sortland, and so we go to the town of Sortland (yes, Sortland on Sortland) to have dinner together as a farewell.

The next day we drive to our Dutch friends that are in a cabin at a camping on Sortland. We are the only ones camping, weirdly enough, though the weather is quite nice again. The next few days we work and spend time with our friends. We bake them Dutch pancakes in exchange for ‘stroop’ they took with them for us. Another night, we have dinner with our friends outside in the sun.

The next day we drive over the island of Sortland to an amazing beach they wanted to show us: Sandvika beach. Hovden beach, well known is just a little bit further on the same road but this beach is less known and so insanely beautiful. It’s very clear why the Vesterålen are known for their pristine beaches. We walk around and enjoy the magnificent view while the dogs play in the water.

We know the Vesterålen are on our list to visit again, together with the Lyngen Alps we visited before. And now we are on our way to the Lofoten, the famous archipelago.
