The most famous fjord in Norway is located near Geiranger and is called Geirangerfjord. This UNESCO world heritage site has much to offer.
Ways to see the Geirangerfjord Norway
The best way to see the Geirangerfjord is by boat (of course!). You will see impressive rocks rising from the water, and most of the waterfalls the best if you are on the water.
Ferry
You can take a ferry from Geiranger to Hellesylt (and back) to see the waterfalls. This is not a cheap ferry, and the ferry can be crowded in summer.
Fjord cruise
There is a special fjord cruise that takes you alongside all the waterfalls. You will get more information about what you are seeing through an audioguide. The tours take 60 or 90 minutes and go multiple times a day.
Rib boat
Want some adrenaline while you fly over the water and see those waterfalls? In a RIB boat you will go through the fjord at high speed. The small boat can get much closer to the waterfalls than the ferries and cruises, giving you a special perspective.
A kayak tour
Another special way to see the fjord is slower: rent a kayak for 1 person or two persons and peddle across the fjord yourself. There are even guided tours where you go with a group of people.
Rent a boat
You can also rent your own boat and see the waterfalls at your own speed. You can rent a boat for 2, 3 or 4 hours and cruise the water yourself.
This is something we did because we quickly realised that for 3 people renting a boat for 3 hours was cheaper than taking the fjord cruise for 1 hour! We loved seeing the waterfalls at our own pace. Check out our experience here:
But you can also see the fjord from the road, and it is good to add that to your list (next to seeing it from the water) because it gives you a different perspective. Viewpoints show you the fjord in all its glory on both roads coming in or going out of the Geiranger village.
The Waterfalls of Geiranger
The Geirangerfjord is so well known because of all the waterfalls. There are so many, and they all have names. The best time to visit the waterfalls is in spring or early summer when the snow is still melting and adding to the amount of water that flows down the mountain.

The Seven Sisters
The Seven Sisters are seven waterfalls close to each other and are the most famous. But know you won’t always get to see all seven sisters; some of the waterfalls dry in summer.
The Suitor
The ‘Friaren’, or Suitor waterfall, can be seen on the opposite side of the fjord. This was our favourite waterfall. This waterfall starts small and then fans out once it hits the rocks. It looks a bit like a bottle because of this. And with its 440-meter fall, it’s a big waterfall.
The Bridal Veil
The Bridal Veil is a 300-meter-high waterfall. The waterfall doesn’t have a high volume, giving it its veil-like effect and seeing the waterfall can sometimes be tricky because the water falls so lightly.
The Geiranger village
The village of Geiranger, located at the end of the fjord, is one of the most visited villages in Norway. This means that in summer, the village is overflowing with tourists because of all those that come by car, but even more so because of all the cruise ships that come to the village. We were there in the off-season, and the village was cute and fun.
The village offers several shops, cafés and restaurants. We loved the little chocolate shop that offered chocolate snacks and hot chocolate.
